Start with the reason you might need flexibility

A private tour can be useful when you need a particular pace, pickup location or dietary arrangement. A shared tour can work well when the route suits you and you enjoy company. Neither format guarantees quality. List the changes you would actually request, then ask whether the provider will deliver them. Paying for a private vehicle has less value if the rest of the itinerary remains fixed.

Compare the same route and inclusions

Put transport, guide language, entrance fees, meals and activities side by side. A private product with fewer inclusions is not directly comparable with a shared package covering more costs. Check whether the guide accompanies the full journey or meets you at one site. Identify the group size actually allowed on a small-group tour rather than assuming the label always means only a handful of guests.

Make timing and access specific

If traveling with children, older relatives or someone with mobility needs, discuss breaks, walking surfaces and boarding requirements. Ask what can be changed on the day and what needs advance arrangement. A private tour may still depend on venue hours and fixed boat departures. Write down the agreed plan so an important need is not reduced to an informal note passed between booking staff and the guide.

Understand how the price is quoted

Check whether the amount is per person or for the whole party and whether a minimum group size applies. Ask about single-traveler supplements and the cost of extra participants. For shared tours, confirm what happens if the operator does not reach its minimum numbers. Read cancellation terms for both the customer and provider. A clear policy matters as much as a small difference in the displayed price.

Choose the format you will enjoy

Think about how you like to spend a day: asking detailed questions, meeting other travelers, moving slowly or following a set plan. Read recent reviews for those characteristics rather than only the overall score. If the shared itinerary already fits, it may offer good value. If a few specific adjustments would transform the experience, a clearly agreed private tour may justify the extra cost.
