Use the booked fare as your starting point
Baggage allowances are tied to the applicable airline, route and fare conditions. Avoid relying on a weight figure copied from a general travel article. Open the allowance shown during booking and compare it with the operating carrier's current information. Vietnam Airlines provides a baggage information page and calculator for its services; for another airline, use that carrier's own guidance. Save the conditions that apply to your specific ticket.
Separate cabin and checked bags
Write down the permitted number, dimensions and weight for cabin baggage, plus the checked allowance if included. Check whether a small personal item is covered separately or forms part of the limit. Measure the actual bag, including protruding parts where the airline requires that approach. A compact-looking case can still exceed a stated dimension, and two items with the same combined weight may not satisfy a piece limit.
Price additional baggage before choosing
If you know you need checked luggage, compare the total fare after adding it. Check whether purchasing baggage in advance is available and what deadline applies. Read the conditions for changes, refunds and transfer to a different flight. Do not assume an unused allowance from one traveler or segment can automatically cover another. Ask the airline when the itinerary involves multiple carriers or separate bookings.
Check unusual and restricted items directly
Sports equipment, musical instruments, mobility devices and other special items may need separate arrangements. Batteries, liquids and potentially restricted goods require current carrier and security guidance for the journey. Do not use a general packing list as approval to carry an item. Ask the responsible airline about the exact object and keep its answer accessible when special handling has been agreed.
Pack for disruption as well as the flight
Keep essential documents, necessary personal items and appropriate valuables with you in accordance with the carrier's rules. Label checked luggage and retain baggage receipts. Before leaving for the airport, weigh your bags again after adding last-minute purchases. A clear allowance and a modest packing plan are easier to manage than trying to negotiate an unexpected excess charge when check-in is closing.
