Start with a soft landing
Book a flexible short stay before committing to a lease. Choose somewhere that makes your first few errands manageable, and save the full address in Vietnamese on your phone. Share your flight details with your accommodation and ask where to meet a prearranged driver. Leave the arrival evening free: traffic, luggage and a new time zone make a packed itinerary unhelpful.
Make your phone useful
Arrange a mobile data connection through an official provider or an authorised seller. Check device compatibility, identification requirements, coverage and the actual data allowance before buying. Download an offline map and keep your accommodation address available without a connection. Check the pickup point and vehicle details whenever you book a ride.
Try your routine before choosing a home
Spend time in two or three neighborhoods at the hours you would normally travel. A beautiful apartment can feel very different when your commute, evening noise and grocery run enter the picture. Visit potential homes in person. Check air conditioning, water pressure, mobile signal, internet, nearby construction and the route home after dark.
Put the full cost on paper
Ask for a written breakdown of rent, deposit, electricity, water, internet, cleaning, parking and building fees. Clarify what happens if you leave early and how the deposit is returned. Record the property condition before moving in. Set aside an arrival buffer for deposits, transport and household essentials rather than spending your whole budget on rent.
Leave space to settle in
Build a small routine: a morning coffee, one reliable lunch spot and a walk when the heat eases. Learn simple greetings and ask before photographing people. Keep the first weekend open to revisit a neighborhood you liked. For entry, residence or work questions, consult the relevant Vietnamese authority and your employer or a qualified adviser; a travel guide cannot establish your eligibility.
